Yeah this has been happening to me when I try to update. It is a like 225 MB set of updates right after the Service pack 2 updates. The interesting thing for me is this is a complete fresh install. I had reinstalled because I was getting a runtime dll error and I don't really use alot of programs so reinstall only takes like a few hours.

After I restore the same 61 updates are available and if I install them it happens again, so I just made it not automatically update & i will only choose security updates, hopefully that will work well enough.

If you have a CD just start off the CD and choose repair. If repair doesn't work then do a restore. You should have a restore point if it is trying to update. If you don't have a cd you could try to restore in safe and if that doesnt work you might have to borrow someone's vista cd or maybe a boot cd so you can get in & run restore.
