Scandisc on start up automatically cancels

Specs: Windows Vista Home Premuim, 3GB
Whenever I turn my computer on, it comes up with the message that it needs to scan the disc, with its usual press any button to skip. though i never press any buttons, it always skips anyway and says scan disc cancelled. I have no idea why this comes up every time, nor why it automatically cancels itself. I know i could turn off the scan disc, but there is obviously a deeper problem which i want to fix, rather than just disabling the symptoms.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Running Vista Home Premium on a Compaq CQ50, AMD Turion Dual-Core, 2GHz, 3GB RAM

One place to start is the control panel, administrative tools, event viewer, windows events, system events.......see if there are exclamation marks or red x noting hard disk errors or any constant system error.

thousands of both yellow and red exclamation marks. I have 3800 yellow and 1478 red exclamation marks there; is there any quick way to sort through and find if any are problematic with the start up?
