Retrieving Pictures Saved as DAT files

August 22, 2014 at 14:10:34
Specs: Windows Vista
We saved years of Pictures to two USB Flash Drive Cruzer Glide. Somehow they were converted to DAT files when saved and are now not viewable. How do I turn them back to Camera Generated JPEGS?

Firstly go to "Control Panel > Folder Options > View". On the list un-tick 'Hide extensions for known file types'. For security and other reasons it is best left that way.

Check one of your .dat files again and see if the file extension remains the same.

Copy one .dat file off the flash drive onto your desktop. Assuming it still only shows a .dat extension then change it to .jpg instead. Double click it and let us know if it opens, or what exactly happens.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Unfortunately your solution did not work. I do appreciate the suggestion.. It is frustrating.

What I cannot figure out is how they got converted in the first place. The singular dat files all appear empty, if you look at the list of files on the computer. If you try to open them in Windows Media or Windows Photo Gallery, all that appears is a small blank box. If you go to "My Computer" and click on the flash drive, you see that the flash drive is completely full, with the pictures and video I placed onto the flash drive. If I save one of the files to the desktop, it will not open as anything else other than an empty dat file.
