I would like to restore my laptop but keep personal files. My memory is full, recovery D is full and i have numerous programmes that I never use.
Save your personal files to an external hard drive then put them back after the factory restore. Note that "memory" means "RAM" - what you mean, I assume, is hard drive space.
Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
It would help to know the make/model of your laptop. Memory & storage space are different things. Recovery D is not used by the system & should not have been used for storage. Its purpose is to reinstall the OS & revert back to the factory condition. Here's an explanation from HP:

If your C drive it almost full, it's obviously because you have too much crap on it. You're going to have to start uninstalling old/unnecessary programs & deleting old/unnecessary files. Make sure to empty the Recycle Bin. Any files in it still take up space until it's emptied. Do you regularly use a cleaning program such as CCleaner-Slim?

Run the cleaner & remove everything it finds.
Then follow this how-to exactly to free up several GBs of space:
