Solved Restored laptop back to 2008... please help with updates

June 27, 2018 at 05:26:32
Specs: Windows Vista
Hi, guys I am new here.

I have a laptop with windows Vista and I did not realize that windows vista is not supported anymore until now, when I restored the laptop back to 2008 as I thought the laptop would work better.

I am trying to download the last windows vista updates but I only get errors, 0xc8000247, code 80072EFE etc.

I cannot even install my antivirus

I am quite desperate guys.. I like my vista and would like to stay on this windows version.

I am pretty dumb for these things being honest, anyone can help?

Thank you, have a lovely day

"The laptop is in German, im sorry"
That is going to make things very tricky.

Device Manager is Ok, let me think of what to do for 5mins.

Do you have the Vista CD?
What version of Vista?

Well, assuming the code is the Win32 error code that stopped Windows Update, you should probably update your network drivers first.
C:\>err 0x80072EFE
# as an HRESULT: Severity: FAILURE (1), Facility: 0x7, Code 0x2efe
# for hex 0x2efe / decimal 12030 :
  ERROR_INTERNET_CONNECTION_ABORTED inetmsg.h
  ERROR_INTERNET_CONNECTION_ABORTED wininet.h
# 2 matches found for "0x80072EFE"

Failing that, upload your WindowsUpdate.log. It should be in your Windows directory, whatever it goes by in the German version.

Not only is Vista no longer supported by Microsoft, but support is also being dropped (or already has been) by software developers (antivirus, browsers, drivers, etc). I suggest you get rid of it & replace it with either Win7 or Linux. Otherwise, you're wasting your time. Check the worldwide market share stats; guess which Windows version is dead last? Almost 5 times as many users run XP than Vista. Pretty sad.

"when got the laptop"
Exact model of the Laptop please.

I am in this time zone.
https://www.timeanddate.com/worldcl...

Once you have finished running Tweaking.com, run Farbar please.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it onto your Desktop. If your default download location is not the Desktop, drag it out of it's location onto the Desktop.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...
If we have to run Farbar more than once, refer this SS.
http://i.imgur.com/yUxNw0j.gif
Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the Desktop.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt) on the Desktop.
The logs are large, upload them using one of these. No time delays/Captcha-I'm not a Robot/account/registration needed. Give us the links please.

Well, I guess im getting too old like my laptop and the system lol

I have used ubuntu for a little while with a small netbook and it was not easy to use in my opinion, I have a very hectic life (work and child) and dont have the time to learn new things.

I really liked my vista, I will try a couple of things more guys then maybe thinking of going windows 7...

I liked xp too, used to have it before... time flies

I liked Win3.1 too, but at some point, you have to bite the bullet.

If you insist on keeping Vista, you will need a secure browser. From what I've read, the only two that still support Vista are Opera 36 & LunaScape. http://www.lunascape.tv/products/wi...

Look, my interest in this site has waned to the bare minimum. I'd rather not be in a thread with yet another OS pissing contest, especially when the championed OS is at the tail end of its own support cycle. I will point out that when you say all developers across the board are dropping / have dropped Vista support, that includes malware authors. To wit, try to find a virus in the wild that'll run on that Win3.1 box.

myselfvista:
If you're still having trouble installing SP2, there are still two simple fixes you can try. First open a Command Prompt as administrator, run the following, then reboot once it's done:

SFC /SCANNOW

After you do that, download and run the SUR for Vista.

You can also try the offline SP2 installer, found here. At the very least, it should fail faster than going through Windows Updates.

If none of that helps, in your Windows directory should be a Logs directory. In that, a CSB directory. That directory should hold a CSB.log and possibly a CheckSUR.log. Upload those and we'll see if I spot anything.

You didn't run Farbar from the Desktop, as per instructions. Drag it out of Downloads for this step.

Let me know if you have any trouble converting to German or matching the text below.

Copy & Paste the text in Blue below & save it into Notepad on your Desktop & name it fixlist.txt
NOTE: It is important that Notepad is used. The fix will not work if Word or some other program is used.
NOTE: It is important that both files, FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system.

Windows resource protection has damaged "damaged files found and some of the files could not repair."

Lets see if we can get this side of things fixed by running chkdsk.

Still waiting for that CBS.log, as well as the results from running the SUR.

Hi, there. Sorry I did not reply to you directly, Razor, but I have done already what you said with no success. I run the SFC /SCANNOW, there were errors there but could not be repaired. Then updates are not working still.
Then I am not allowed to see the CBS.log, it is denied to me even open it or do anything.
I tried to run the SUR but get the error 0xc8000247. I could not find that one "CheckSUR.log"

"I run the SFC /SCANNOW, there were errors there but could not be repaired"
Correct, as per my post #24.

"I tried to run the SUR but get the error 0xc8000247"
Probably too early, hoping chkdsk will fix some of the problems, then we can run another set of tools.

Yeah, I'm going with potential disk issues as well. Check the disk, easiest method is probably this one: https://www.dummies.com/computers/o...

Just to make sure it isn't an activation issue, Hit [⊞ Win] + R to bring up the Run dialog, and run the following:

slmgr.vbs /xpr
It should say something about Vista being activated.

Hi there. I have been trying to run chkdsk and it cancels the process on his own without me doing anything or pressing anything even in the start of the scan, and the computer reestarts again quickly.

I tried in safe mode with command prompt too and it says that it cannot be done as there is another process interfering or something like that (sorry do not remember exactly what it was said) and asks me if I want to do it once the computer starts again, I press yes and then the safe mode keeps hanging and nothing happens, so I have to remove the cable to forcefully switch off the laptop

At the moment I am using a USB mouse and a USB keyboard as in my laptop they dont really work well, not sure if this is worth to mention...

I am getting frustrated being fair. I have seen on EBAY very cheap, like 2 pounds, like Windows vista pac 2 for sell in a CD, I wonder if installed by CD would make any difference?

Then I saw very cheap as well Windows 7 with a key... guessing they are not legal...

I am quite happy to keep helping, if you want to keep trying.

1: Run Lazesoft.
How to use a Lazesoft Windows Recovery CD or USB device to fix the boot problems if your Windows operating system does not start correctly.

Once you have a command prompt, Copy & Paste > chkdsk c: /f /r and then press <Enter>

2: run SFCFix
https://www.ghacks.net/2015/11/06/s...

3: After SFCFix, go to >

1. Services > cryptographic services ( should be Automatic (Started) > properties > logon (identity)

2. Give the identity account (usually 'network service') full permission on the C: drive.

4: If needed, next step.
Fix Windows corruption errors by using the DISM or System Update Readiness tool

"why could be that?"
1: Make the Lazesoft boot disk on a good computer.

2: Insert that disk in your Vista laptop.

3: Boot ( F2 ) into your bios & make sure that booting from that disk is selected.

4: Hit F10 to save

It will now restart & boot into Lazesoft.

Can you explain a bit more in detail number 3, please? I don’t really know much about computing...

I am going to download the program in a small netbook I got then put it in a usb then plug in the laptop...and then do I have to switch on the laptop and hit F2 or how?

Thanks

"and then do I have to switch on the laptop and hit F2 or how?"
Yep.

Keep trying until you get into the bios.

You may have an easier way, hit the Pause button during the boot up & tell me what it says down the bottom of the screen, besides F2.

Hit the Space bar to move on from Pause.

It is worth to mention something weird things this laptop does I guess... If for any reason I have to switch off the computer forcefully or I unplug it from socket (laptop has got no battery as lost) the time and date of computer goes back to 2008, so have to change the date and time, sometimes it makes a beeping noise, a continuous one after switching it on, but does not happen all the time.
The mouse and the keyboard dont work properly on laptop, so they are external with usb. There is no FN on the external keyboard.

"the time and date of computer goes back to 2008"
That usually means the CMOS battery needs replacing.
Very cheap in Kmart, BigW, computer shops etc.

Is the drive with Lazesoft on, plugged in?

If so, the go to the boot tab & select that drive to boot first.

F10 to save your selection, on reboot, you will get the Lazesoft screen..
