Restore HP laptop without losing 40GB of data

Specs: Windows Vista
I own an HP pavilion dv4 and I'd like to know if
there is a way to create a partition on the hard
drive as a seperate storage area for backup
files so I can restore the other partitions back
to factory. I do not own a portable hard drive
and I have over 40 gigabytes of audio software
and audio samples and plug ins that I do not
want to reinstall.. If I could just move the files
to a private section of my hard drive I could
move them back into the restored partition
which would help me out a lot. Any info on
this is greatly appreciated.

No it will not work because the recovery wizard needs to take possession of the whole hard disk in order to restore it to factory condition.

Any time you create a partition, HP recovery will cease to work. This is because the recovery wizard is aware of the original hard disk geometry, so any change made to it triggers the wizard to stop working permanently.

You really need to backup what is dear to you. Don't you have DVD burner? Or why cannot you get a portable hard drive?
