Specs: Windows Vista
i have a dell studio 1537 laptop...i am trying to restore from factory image...when i try and run it from the recovery partition, i get an error and doesnt work. i have a dvd windows vista installation disk and a drivers and utilities cd. i think the re-installation dvd does not let me restore from factory image, which is what i want to do. what should I do now? Make a recovery disk? or can I open the command prompt, format the c: drive from there and then use the installation dvd to re-install windows vista? thanks!

You can do a fresh install off those disks, you put in the Operating system disk first, then the drivers after. That will take it back to out of the box settings. You may also have an image to restore from. Try pressing the alt key + F11 key when it first starts, see if that brings up the recovery partition. If not those disks will work.

When you run the recovery partition, run the destuctive recovery. This will format C:\ drive and leave the D:\ partition. Install the recovery up until the error message (probablly a code purple or some such). Shut down the computer using the power switch. Insert your Vista CD and on the startup screen choose R or Repair. It will complete the installation of your recovery
