Windows 7 is about to hit the RTM stage, I suggest you hold off your upgrade plan for just a little bit more. So far, the minimum Windows 7 requirements from M$ is:

-- 1GHz CPU (32/64-bit)
-- 1GB of RAM (32-bit) & 2GB (64-bit)
-- 16GB HDD (32-bit) & 20GB (64-bit)
-- DX9 GPU with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Upgrade your RAM as planned & you should be good.
