removed Norton now can't ping or surf

Specs: Windows XP, amd 64x2 Dual core 3600 1.9Ghz
Have Dell 32 bit windows Vista. Removed Norton using Uninstall. Upgraded to IE9 and now I can get email but cannot connect to Internet and cannot ping. Can self ping with127 0 0 1 but cannot even hit default gateway.
Diag says Internet connection is good.
Removed IE9 and went back to IE8. reboot... Same results
Installed Mozilla Firefox... no difference.
It has to be something with Windows because I am writing this from laptop on same connection. Not ISP problem
Went into Broad band connection to verify clients and protocols.
One thing I do not have is original disks. Cam loaded from factory and I bought from a friend who got a deal on three of these from Dell. Has been running ok for 2 1/2 - 3 years.

Any ideas? any help will be appreciated.

Compare the results of ipconfig /all on both computers.

1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.

ok, The laptop is running xp. On my desk top there is no primary dns suffix, Ip routing is not enabled and the WINS proxy is not enabled
The desk top has an IPv6 addres the laptop doesn't. the IPv4 addresse on the desktop is sequential to the IP address of the laptop (which is correct since they are both using a netgear router. default gateway is the same and the DHCP server addres is the same.
The Desktop has DHCPv6 IAID and Client DUID
Net Bios is enabled over TCPIP for the desk top. Ther are two tunnel adapter LAC
On the first DHCP is not enabled
and it has the DHCPv6
The second also has the DHCP not enabled.
