... whats on the new harddrive?

... if its a brand new harddrive with nothing on it thats what happens!

... place the first recovery disc into the tray and startup the pc

... also post pc make and model numbers with your next response.

Mavis: Thanks for your reply. Following your instruction to put the recovery disc in and then power up worked excellently. I also pressured HP to tell me that the error message could be avoided by taking out all but one memory card to load the recovery discs. Thanks again for taking the time to respond!!

... thats interesting when you say memory card do you mean "ram chip"?

... as it would be a good idea "not" to have any memory cards in their slots during that process.

Hp did say memory card (there were two under the optical disc drive, to the right of the fan). I presume all is well as it is working well.
