Solved Questions about install.wim files

Specs: Windows Vista
On my Vista c:\ drive in the Downloads folderthere is the install.wim file. Seems like an odd directory for it.

After looking it up it turns out to be some type of image file. It opens to show pretty much a total directory of a naked operating system without any user data, and is a couple of gigabytes large.

From tech forums it is used as part of image building with WAIK -- I am wondering if I could make an ISO file out of it and set it up as a virtual OS or something useful since it sits there taking up all that space. Would appreciate feedback.

Thanks, AR

It would appear to be an unused download. Rather than try to use if for some purpose for which it isn't designed I would be inclined to just delete it and recover the space..

If you want a virutal machine there are tailored programs for doing this, including one from MS which is free.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
