If the power won't come on at all (no lights, beeps, fans), it's obviously hardware-related. A virus can't affect that deeply into hardware.

Yes if there are no lights, no beeps, no signs of any power, it would be good to see if the power supply has failed. It's a common hardware failure and relatively inexpensive. Shouldn't cost much to have it tested and a new one installed its only 4 screws. Thats where I would start. If there are signs of power but no windows loading you may have other hardware issues.

Thank you for your response... I forgot to include:
1. the green power light comes on,
2. then a yellow light is displalyed, and I hear the fan in the power supply unit; and then goes silent.
3. however there is then no further action. The screen remains dark.

Thanks in advance for your help

It could still be a faulty power supply, it could also be a failing video card (either on-board or an installed card), or it could be a failing hard drive, which can be tested by downloading the manufacturers drive fitness test. I would think it is probably a bad video card or power supply, but it could be a corrupted operating system. Unless you are pretty comfortable with computers you may just wanna have a tech look at it.
