proper cd for data backup

Specs: Windows Vista
I am trying to backup data information-I tried to use a cd-r disc but it tells me to put in a writable disc-do i need a dvd rw disc

Make sure the CD is completely empty....What happens when you try brand new CD-R ?

I used a new cd-r it says it failed because I need to put in a writable disc-I thought maybe I needed a different disc. My old computer took a cd-r but i am thinking maybe it is not compatable with this present computer i have

I think your CD-ROM Drive Supports CD-R...do you use Nero....please specify !!!!
