programs only work in safe mode

July 31, 2013 at 18:06:36
Specs: Windows Vista
Hello,

When I use safe mode all programs work. When I am in non safe mode any icon I click on does not respond. I have run anti virus scans and they are clear. I have also ran malewarebytes it is also clear. Do I have a virus? Do I have a software issue or hardware issue? Both? Would doing a system restore do any good? Vista OS. What should I do to try to fix these issues? Please make your answers clear and easy to understand.

Thanks for any and all help.

Only being able to run in Safe Mode is usually (but not always) a driver issue.

If this just suddenly happened then System Restore to a date/time before that might well fix it.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

How do I check to see if this is a driver issue? When I have tried to update drivers in the past my system got messed up. Thanks for your help.

It would probably be quicker to run System Restore as suggested. This will not affect any of your own stuff, just programs and updates that have been added since.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Hi ryrhino,

This issue could be because of a third party application running in the background. Please perform clean boot to troubleshoot the issue. You may refer to the link mentioned below:

It might not even hurt to run malwarebytes on a semi weekly basis, either before you clear the driver or after.

When in non safe mode the start menu does not appear. I am unable to see any start menu options. When hovering the mouse over start I get the waiting symbol. Any mouse click or any key on the keyboard nothing happens. If I do the clean boot in safe mode will that be beneficial?

System Restore should be tried before thinking about a clean boot. See here:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/...

That's assuming you can get to "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" (most likely you can) - it should be on the list after tapping F8..

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Hi ryrhino,

Try creating a new profile in safe mode. Boot the system in normal mode and login to the new profile. Check if the new profile works properly.

NOTE: Ensure that the new profile created has administrator rights.

If you have multiple antivirus software installed on the system. Remove all and then try booting the system in normal mode.

If the system boot properly in normal mode, re-install one anti-virus software.

Thanks & Regards
