Linux is free... Ubuntu, and Puppy being just two flavours of many out there...
It's foolish to run any Windows versions older than Win7. Vista & XP are no longer supported & are major security risks. Almost all versions of Linux are free & rarely, if ever, get infected. We'd have to know your system specs & what you want to be able to do, then we can suggest which to try. I'm a fan of Linux Mint Xfce. 18.2 is the latest Xfce available, 18.3 is still in Beta testing. However, if you prefer Cinnamon or Mate editions, 18.3 is available. You will have to download the ISO of your choice, then burn to a DVD using the appropriate software (CDBurnerXP or ImgBurn), then boot off the disc. You can test the OS without actually installing it.

"riider" is one of several here are more familiar with Linux and the assorted flavours. My experience is very marginal. Go with the advice he and one or three others here offer; as it will be based on a greater degree of personal experience.
