Solved Notepad - Why can't I read the document?

Specs: Windows Vista
I have Windows Vista. A document was emailed to me. It opens in Notepad but I cannot read the text -- there's lots of musical notes and random lettering with no formatting. How can I restore the formatting and original text in order to read it?

What is the file extension for the file received, ie .txt .doc .wps etc? Chances are that you haven't the right program on board to open it but we shall see.....

✔ Best Answer
.doc documents are created by Microsoft Word. Notepad ( and Wordpad for that matter) will not be able to read this type of documents. You have two options (assuming that you do not have M$ Office suite installed):

1. Ask whoever gave you the .doc file to save it in .txt extension, or

2. Download & install Word Viewer from M$ HERE.

If you don't have Microsft Word and need to read and write to Doc files, You can download Open Office it's a free application that can read Microsoft documents.
