my laptop freezes instantly after start-up

August 10, 2011 at 20:14:01
Specs: Windows Vista
I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, and every time I would start it up, it would freeze right away. After I type my password to log in, there's a black screen. Sometimes the black screen goes away and loads windows but it would freeze right away, and sometimes the black screen stays and the computer is frozen. I tried starting it up in safe mode, but it would just freeze and start up in normal mode. Help, how do I fix this?

Some things you could try off the bat:
- On startup, open task manager [ctrl+shift+esc] > processes tab > what is the cpu at and is any one app hogging the cpu?
- Start > run > msconfig > startup tab > disable everything except for what needs to startup, which is pretty much just your internet security apps > apply > close > restart.
- Defrag your hard drive. My computer > right click hdd > properties > tools > defragment > restart after done.

try removing 1 ram stick and booting up...swap them out that way to see if the ram has started to fail.
Other than that, make up a memtest cd and pop it in and fire up the laptop....let it scan to see if you have ram problems.

Some HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers
