my computer screen is black with a white line

Specs: Windows Vista
i was looking at a picture slide show on my laptop, i tried to exit the slide show, but it wouldn't let me, so i shut down the computer a restarted it. now i have a black screen with a solid white line down the middle. the computer is working fine, any ideas on how to fix the problem

How is it fine with such a screen?

Turn everything off and unplug everything. Then press power buttons a few times then return ac and power back up to see if changes. If not then swap with known working to diag.

1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.

fine meaning it loads and runs fine, i can access the internet and everything,my desktop background is black with the white line down the middle

Sounds like its lost horizontal scanning. Most likely a monitor fault.

EDIT:
I might have misunderstood the symptoms (assuming the black screen with white line was all that was visible). If you can still see desktop icons then ignore this post.

When you boot up is it faulty also or only when logged on to your account? Try to boot to safe mode maybe.

I'd suspect some failure in hardware but a live cd ought to prove it. If you have the Vista DVD boot to it just to see if it will boot to the repair features. If it fails then you know it is hardware.
