MS Word 2000 spacing changes

Specs: Windows Vista
I'm on my 13th page of a double spaced paper but when I hit enter to begin a new paragraph, it suddenly refuses to just double space! It's tripling or quadrupling to the next paragraph. I've repeatedly checked the paragraph formatting, tried highlighting parts and clicking on formatting - double spacing, edit - select all - format double spacing, and repeatedly checked to be sure it was 'body-paragraph, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font - all to no avail! Interestingly, when I highlight the current page and the reference page after it, the font changes to Arial! Can you PLEASE help?!! I'm desperate to finish this paper!

I don't know what you may have done for the formatting to misbehave, but the changing font type, indicates you have only selected formatting for this document as opposed to setting up a custom template with font type and size and the required formatting options.
I suggest you create a custom template and save it under another name, like "double space pgh" and use it for the whole document.
You should then try a copy and paste into the new template to make sure it works the way you want, you may need to first remove the formatting in the original.
Make sure to make a backup copy of your work first before making any changes.
