Solved Monitor not powering up

April 16, 2012 at 13:42:35
Specs: Windows Vista SP2, Intel Celeron D/2GHZ
I have this Compaq desktop that the monitor will not power up when I turn it on the power lite is green for a few seconds the changes to brown without initializing. I have tried it on another computer and it works ok. I am thinking it may be a power supply issue? It has a 250 watt PSU and I am wondering if I can put in a 400 watt PSU in its place?? Please advise or if anyone has another suggestion please add it.
Thank You in advance

If the computer isn't sending a display to the monitor, it could be any number of issues. Does the monitor display anything on screen when you first boot the computer, or are you connecting it while an operating system is running? Is the system emitting any beep codes? If the graphics card is removable, does it work when it is connected to another computer? Is there more than one graphics card in the computer?

And so on, and so on.

Also, we don't know enough about your current power supply to know if it can easily be swapped. Some systems have proprietary power supplies that are difficult to replace.

Although a faulty PSU is possible, the symptoms sound more liike a faulty display card.
If it is an inbuilt module then you might be able to add a display card to get around it.

No problem in using a higher wattage PSU as long as the rest of its spec is adequate.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Hey all thanks for the info. I have looked the power sply over and it appears that it should mount the same as whats in my system. The PSU I have to use to replace came out of an older HP Desktop so it should work, I just wasn't sure about the power difference. I am going to try it and see what happens. The compaq does have an add on graphics card and the monitor is plugged into it but I did remove it and used the on board plug (still no image) but it may be shut off? I'll post in a day or so when I get alittle time to tear back into it. As I mentioned when I power on the Monitor it does show the power lite as green but only for a few seconds and then changes to brown with no images, also the computer doesn't beep at all when I start it up all I hear are the fans working.
Thanks again and i'll let you know if it works or not!
