Missing DVD drive

Dell / Xps gen5
June 3, 2009 at 08:16:55
Specs: Windows Vista, 4gb
I recently upgraded my dell xps gen5 from xp to vista ultimate (and increased my memory to 4gb.
Now my DVD drive has disappeared from my computer - it doesn't show up on the computer screen.
I tried uninstalling the DVD using the device manager, and then restarting the PC. The drive shows up on the device manager, but is still missing on the computer screen. I tried updating the driver using the device manager, but that didn't help.
I asked Dell for help, but they said that since I didn't buy Vista from them, they wouldn't help me.
I'm stuck and don't know what to do.
Can someone help me?

ps I tried to post this question before I registered. Sorry if it appears twice.
