midi from synthesizer to USB of DELL Inspiron

Dell Inspiron e1405, e1505, e1705 series...

Specs: Windows Vista
I am connecting midi in and midi out of a synthesizer to USB of my laptop. It is not working; the device is not right. There is a microphone symbol on the laptop indicating the "IN." it is a tiny little cable type. Is it the only way I can get "audio in?"

I thought USB is for everything.

Thanks

Similar but not exactly. The one I have only has the title "USB MIDI Cable Converter PC to Music Keyboard" by the exact same company.

I followed the instruction to connect the "in" of the cable to the "OUT" of the SYNTHesizer, and "out" of the cable to the "IN" of the SYNTH.

My computer detected the new device when I plugged the USB in. However, the recording software and the SOUND DEVICE in the Control Panel of the Windows 7 do NOT recognize the new device.

Solved the problem! The software I used is only for AUDIO but not for MIDI SEQUENCER. Switch to a different software, and VOILA! Thanks
