Magenta screen in unsupported screen resolu

Specs: Windows Vista Home Premium SP2, Core 2 Duo E7400 2.8GHz / 3GB DDR2 800MHZ
I have an ATI Radeon HD 4350 hooked up to a Viewsonic N4251w HD TV via HDMI. Once Vista is booted, only a few screen resoultions seem to work (1920x1080, 1280x720, etc.) but the generic resoultions (800x600, 1024x768, etc.) don't seem to be supported by the monitor - the screen will turn magenta.

The problem is that older programs that default to full screen and don't have a windowed mode, will only allow these "unsupported" magenta resolutions.
When the PC boots or once it's in safe mode, 800x600 is supported by the monitor properly, so these resoultions do seem to be supported by the monitor...
ATI Catalyst doesn't allow any of these modes nor a "force resolution" mode as is suggested on their website.
Windows Display Center does allow these modes, but the screen become magenta.
Is there a way of getting these to work once Vista is booted properly?
Has anyone else had this problem?

I haven't had this problem, but I have had a problem connecting my PC to a television. I ended up with no colour at all and the resolution was so poor it was difficult to read properly. No matter what I tried, each time I restarted I ended up with a no-colour display and a monitor listed as "Generic" by not as a television. I ended up purchasing a monitor instead which solved my problem.

I'm using this as a home theater PC. Since it works great for Media Center, internet, emulation and about 80% of my PC games, it wouldn't make sense replacing the TV for the 20% of older games...
Just curious if there was a way of getting it to work since these resolutions do seem to work during boot up and in safe mode...
