Login desktop has changed

Specs: Windows Vista
Since restarting my PC yesterday, and inputting my password for the only account on there, everything has changed. The desktop looks like it has reverted back to its factory settings, all the folders and shortcuts have disappeared, mail is no longer configured and the objects on the start bar have gone. It says that the account name is the same, and when I go to C drive and look in the relevant user/desktop, everything is in there - but I don't understand why it has happened or what I have to do to get it back to normal. I have tried searching the net for answers but am struggling to word my search correctly to describe my problem.
Has anyone come across this before and can suggest a solution please

Recover your system from the backup image, assuming you created one (which you should have done in order to be prepared for events like this).
I wouldn't dream of not having a backup image of my system, especially since we no longer get a Windows installation CD when we buy a computer.

Are you able to reach System Restore? If so you could restore back to before this first happened.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
