Solved laptop will not boot up

January 31, 2014 at 10:29:48
Specs: Windows 7
when I turn on my laptop it flashes briefly and says at the bottom the F2 screen and such which when I click on it I can go there, but that is all I can do. I don't know how to get off that screen and I can't get my laptop to boot all the way up. I am on a different computer now.

There is no procedure to continue a baulked restore - all you can do is try again. If there is a hardware fault then that would account for it being unable to complete. Best run the RAM and HD tests.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Can you provide what operating system you have as well as laptop brand and model? Also, are there any error messages, beeps that is occurring when you turn your laptop on, or just staying stuck on the first screen when you power it up?

Be more descriptive so others can help out and it be more easier to troubleshoot your issue.

Thanks.

Does F2 take you to the BIOS menu? Do you know how to use it? There should be a list of commands at the bottom of the screen - arrow keys, + or -, Esc, F1, F10, etc. See if your hard drive is listed on the menu, if it's not, it may have failed.

It is a Gateway NV59C running windows 7 when you turn it on it just keeps flashing press F2 to enter setup on the bottom, which you can hit F2 and go to that screen but I don't know how to proceed further from there. That is all it will do.

You may first want to do basic troubleshooting. Have you installed any hardware recently? If you have, you can go disconnecting one at a time and power on the laptop each time to see if it will allow you to proceed.

If you have not installed any hardware, you can try to press F2 and reset the BIOS settings to default.

Try this, it has been known to help once in a while:

Disconnect laptop from domestic power and remove the battery. Hold the Power Off/On button in for 20 secs then reassemble computer. At least it is quick to try.

Can I assume you tried my #5 and it didn't help?

If you just do nothing when it is on the screen that mentions F2, does it ever come up with an error message?

Has this laptop got a CD drive?

I doubt we can get into safe mode but if so it will help a lot. Tap F8 key continuously after powering up. Does this get you to a different menu?

Most likely this is a hardware failure but it is not certain at this stage.

OK Thanks.

The reason I asked about the CD drive is that a hard disk test CD can be made on another computer. Hard disk failure is high on the list of possibilities. See here:
http://www.seagate.com/support/inte...

However, once the CD is produced you have to power on with it in the drive. It will only see the CD if it is set before the HD in BIOS. It might already be set that way but most likely it is not.

Page 24 to 30 in this manual show the BIOS screens, page 29 being boot order:
http://tim.id.au/laptops/gateway/ga...

Let me know if you want to pursue the above further.

EDIT: By looking at page 29 right now you could see if the HD is even showing - if it isn't then it has failed completely. Just exit without saving

Well I used the manual and did a alt f10 and started a recovery which seemed to be working and now it seems to be frozen installing 18/23 in the software installation process. Any ideas how to get it to complete the process?
