Laptop to TV color issues; only black & white

Specs: Windows 7

I am connecting my Toshiba laptop through a VGA to RCA converter to a Toshiba CRT TV. I only get black and white picture. Can anyone help please?
I tried both composite video input and s video input but in vain.

You need a TV with a computer VGA port to get colour. Using an older TV that has no computer input won't give you colour just by using a connection adapter.
