Specs: Windows Vista, 1.86/1gig
Friends laptoptop she was having problems with. (running slow, error's, or just not running) I brought it home to look at it. 1st I'm not a computer tech & learned most of what I know by reading post here. I found several virus's, worms & whatnot. Removed them. Did a spyware scan & fixed any problems. (a few not many) I connect a wire from my router to her laptop it will tell me I'm connected but I can't get on the web. (page not found) I'll connect directly to my modem & get the same problem. Now my laptop I'm using to send this message works wireless so router & modem are working. I'll connect an e-machine desktop & it will work. Any ideal's? Thank you all your great.

I've taken her laptop back to her. Funny it will connect with her router. Now why not at my house? Wireless or wired. To my router or modem. Thank you all.

The ip address for your friends laptop may have been set as a static ip. This would cause the laptop to not automatically detect and get a connection on your router.

you have to go into the properties of the wired internet connection and set it to "automatically detect settings". So,
when you go into the "network connections" folder right click on the icon "Local Area Connection". Then select "Internet Protocol" (TCP/IP) and click Properties. In the next window just make sure "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected.
