Invalid windows vista product key

Microsoft Windows vista ultimate w/ sp1...

Specs: Windows Vista Ultimate
I had a problem with a 1TB hard drive on which I was running Windows Vista Ult. (WVU) I cloned the files and programs I wanted, reformatted and tried to re-install WVU. When I entered the key it stated that the number was not valid? This is not the case. I tried several times. I then installed a brand new drive and tried again and then once again failed to an `invalid key'.
I then tried with XP Pro and the same thing happened!
It was my intention then to remove the files already left on the drive and try again in another PC but found that the drive is now protected!
Anybody any ideas?

If you installed while connected to the internet. Install signature
with the new drive is different. So the install is considered an
illegal copy.

Call microsoft they will fix the problem. Just tell them you installed a new hard drive on your computer and your product key is no longer working.
