Internet running incredibly slow

Specs: Windows Vista
I just had my laptop completely wiped and restarted, acer had put in the wrong discs with my laptop and when I had problems and tried to solve the problem with the recovery discs it didn't work, so I took it to a local repair shop.
The laptop seems to be working fine in all areas except the internet.
I can connect to my broadband no problem, there isn't any problems with the broadband as I'm using it now on my netbook.
I haven't changed anything on the laptop, I tried to open internet explorer so I could download Firefox, but the pages are running incredibly slow. After a couple of time-outs, it finally started the download, but it reckons it will take 2 hrs just to download the install file for firefox!
I have absolutely no idea what could be wrong with it but it's certainly not getting better by itself.
Does anyone here have any clues?

So far, I've run disk clean and defrag, and I have checked that the drivers are the right ones and that they are up to date, but none of those have fixed the problem.

Have you ran a bandwidth test? Just google it and take a test.
Try to figure out the problem with the test result.

How are you connected to the internet? Wired or wireless?
post the results of an ipconfig /all for review
run chkdsk /f and answer yes to the question

Hi! Thanks for the replies, I have absolutely no idea what the problem was, I tried a little bit of everything including: Diskcleanup, defrag, restart router, turn off router wait 10 seconds, reinstall driver, use ethernet cable...
Well, it's working fine now. I don't know if I fixed it or it fixed itself, but it's working and that's all that matters!

If you are running Internet Explorer, one thing that can really slow down the browser is if there are a lot of 'add-ons' running while you are trying to browse, managing your add-ons can really speed up browsing. To fix try this:

In IE, go to ‘tools’ and ‘manage add-ons’.
Disabling any unnecessary add-ons may help your Internet run faster.
Try disabling add-ons with more than a .2 sec load time. (i.e. tool bars)
If you’re still not having any luck, I recommend you reinstall IE8 on your system.

I have this same problem now - running incredibly slow. If there are any images that need to be opened it takes ages to doewnload them, perhap 3-4 minutes for what would usually take about 5 seconds. I've done all the normal defragmentation, scanned in safe mode, used malwarebytes, C cleaner, Kaspersky, A squared, but nothing has made any difference. I've also tried to turn off any unnecessary programs through msconfig. Nothing is helping though.

I would suggest you open a new thread and you may get good help. I would say to post it in the security and virus forum Good Luck ;-)

Yes, create a new post. Coming in on a running thread is a bad idea. No two problems are ever quite alike and that way we don't know your spec. Make sure you state which browser you are using.

If it's just thumbnails that are slow arriving on IE8 or Firefox and you are using a router firewall then I might have fixes - but it sounds like it is more than that. I'll tag your new post when it arrives.

If nothing else is working, try using a directory cleaner, maybe you had a failed fork bomb virus or something.

There is no spoon, I couldn't be bothered to upload one.
