I could not delete empty folders from Desktop

Specs: Windows Vista
I could not delete my empty folders from the Desktop in Vista. It would give me messages on screen to the effect that the folders were empty and the contents could not be found. I went on-line to try and find a way of getting rid of those empty folders. I did find people that had the same problem but no easy solutions.
Then I tried to remember what I had done with those folders exactly. I had gone to Windows Explorer and moved those folders with the contents into a folder in My Documents. I went back to those specific folders in "My Documents" and created the various shortcuts to my Desktop. I then went back to the Desktop and moved the shortcuts right into the various folders. Right clicked on them and deleted them into the recycle bin. The folders in My documents still have the contents intact and I am rid of the empty folders. Hurray!

Boot to safe mode and try to delete it either in gui or from command line using admin account.

Sysinternals has a tool for real stubborn files or use a linux or other live cd.
