I can't play YouTube videos

April 9, 2011 at 19:16:30
Specs: Windows Vista
Have tried to use IE8 and Firefox neither of them can play the videos. I just get a black screen with no messages. I have the latest version of Flash and Shock Wave. I also cannot get some of the hot buttons on certain web pages to respond. One of those is the hot button to download flash on the adobe web page. When I click it all that happens is that page is refreshed.

When I run the PC in safe mode the videos will play and that is how I got flash downloaded. When I tried to play a youtube video I got a message to load Flash which I did using the hot button. Then I played the video. Once out of safe mode I am back where I was before. Something happened in the last few days. I was getting along fine and all of a sudden programs start non responding, the cpu and hard drive intermittently go into overdrive about every ten minutes although the PC was just sitting with nobody touching it. Then I tried to find the problem and things went even further south.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Bill

Did that 3 times so far with no better results. It does work when in Safe Mode.

Could be worth re-installing (or updating) your video drivers.

Please come back and let us know how you got on.

Bill, Find any Flash video on a website, right click it, select Settings, then uncheck "Enable hardware accelleration".

Tried turning off hardware accleration. Did not work. Finally found issue this morning about 2AM. It was the CA Security Center. Some where along the way a couple of items got checked that weren't checked before and that kept every browser from accessing certain videos and reacting to certain hot buttons like the ones on the Adobe site. Not all just some. Everything would work when the PC was running in Safe Mode which will not start CA Security. So I used MSCONFIG to start the system with no services including no CA Security and I couldn't access the videos. Then I started the system with CA on and used the controls to turn off the antivirus and firewall. Still did not work. Then I found a page on the net that indicated I should open the settings on CA and turn off three items. Did that and now I can see the videos. Some how that part of CA must get activated even when CA isn't turned on with a normal boot and it doesn't turn off when the antivirus and firewall are disabled through the CA control window.

Another freebie is "YouTube Downloader". This gets updated regularly as YouTube make changes on their website.

Please come back and let us know the outcome.
