how to run dell recovery partition

Specs: Windows XP
seems most of my vista files are corrupted. I was trying to change security levels to all admin. I can boot to desk top. I can access to a second partition on the dell inspiron 1720. It gives me options to do pc restore. All I want to do is FIX the vista files, NOT reinstall the hd and lose the programs and especially the data. I did a restore point before I did any changes, and I took it back to that. Nothing was fixed and now I go to restore point and it tells me there are no restore points at all. I've tried to boot to the vista cd and it bypasses it and goes to desk top. (CD is set in bios to boot first.) Everything tells me I don't have access or information is missing or can't find the product code. I need help. What can I use in the recovery partition that will just recover my files like I do in my xp with sfc.exe /scannow? Will using the pcrestore on the recovery partition wipe out all my files? PLEASE, my husband is going to kill me. I HATE VISTA!

The pc restore should give you the option of doing a destructive "factory restore" or a non destructive restore, you do not want the factory restore. You should have the option to choose.
