Complete wipe and fresh install of Windows Vista Home Basic, All windows security patches and updates downloaded and installed. Tried to install Java straight afterwards, Downloaded and tried install and got Error Code:1603 window. It was from Java not Windows.
Please help as I am after a full weekend trying to rebuild this heap of sh1t Vista piece of crap laptop and will give it 2 more hours before I bring it to the garden and bury it 10 feet underground.

See here:
http://www.msigeek.com/715/how-to-t...Are you quite certain it didn't come from MSI? It's just surprising if Java and MSI use the same error code.
Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

If you have this update ( KB2918614 ) remove it. Keep in mind, most people do not need Java, hackers love it.

Also review system control panel, advance settings environments. Some custom applications developers create Java applets and to provide stability bundle it the runtime version of Java very common for ver 1.7.### During Java ver 1.8.## it sees that version running and correctly stops and provides error 1603.
Excellent! Removed this Vista update (KB2918614), and installation probs with Java were resolved. Also my installation probs with Open Office were resolved. Thank you Johnw. I cannot understand why this fix is not highlighted on the Java and MS websites. Vista update KB2918614I is surely toxic - what other programs does it impede? And is Johnw the only person to have sussed this out? message edited by OldCove99
