How to Default to Search Companion in Vista

Specs: Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate, 2.401 GHz / 2045 MB
On XP, I can disable Windows Search in the services, sure, but I can not get the regular, actually working search, which they now call Search Companion, back to use when hitting CRTL-F. I have done several internet searches, but kind of stuck on this. Disabling that service, or even indexing, will yield nothing to show up when hitting CTRL-F.
Any solution to this?
Thank you.

I reply as fast as I can but could be hours or months.

The title of this meant to be for XP, not Vista. Can a board admin change OS in title and put in XP queue please?
Thank you.
