Help with Laptop Locks Up/Freezes problems

Specs: Windows Vista
Ok so i have had my laptop for just about 3 years now. I bought it just before my deployment to Iraq where it spent 15 months there with no problems and then another year and a half back in the states without any problems. I have now been in afghanistan for about 3 months and about 2 weeks ago it started freezing up/locking up randomly. I thought maybe it just had a lot of dust and the fan wasnt working properly because it would get extremely hot. So i used canned air and completely cleaned it out and bought an external laptop cooler. My laptop is now a lot cooler however that did not fix the problem. The fan on the laptop works. Sometimes it takes a few hours to freeze/lock up other times it is very quick. It even locks up/freezes up in safe mode. I have run the chkdsk and it sometimes freezes up even while running that. The one time it was able to complete it removed some file in section 192 that was ( " "). I had a virus of some sort a few weeks prior to this happening that resembled the wireless internet program that I use. "It is the only internet available to me at my FOB." I have read a few other posts here just today and am going to give them a try. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Also if you could explain it out to me in simple terms that would also be appreciated because i am not very computer savvy when it comes to fixing computers.
