Error loading operating system

January 22, 2011 at 20:39:28
Specs: Windows Vista Home Basic
I have a Gateway LT3103u netbook, vista home basic os. After the logo screen, monitor goes black with above message. I was able to get to the repair and recovery by alt F10 and it acted like it was repairing. Then when the screen came up to select whether to save data or not I tried to save data to no avail so I chose to reload os without saving data. Message was the same and choices were grayed out when I tried again. So, I bought an external cdrom and ordered the media disk from Gateway. ($20) Set the bios to boot from the extenal cd and tried to boot from the Systems Disk. Now, the system disk will load some files then it goes to the same screen I got when I tried to repair originally after a long "Please wait a moment" and the choices are still greyed out. I tried to insert the second disk (Recovery Disk 1) at this point and it did nothing. Why won't it boot from the systems disk? Just loads files and thats it.

I would test the hard drive to make sure it is not malfunctioning and stopping the installs. It can be many things but its always good to check the drive. The hard drive manufacturers provide a downloadable utility to check the hard drive.

How do I check the hard drive when I can't get anything on it? I can see the hard drive in the bios. I can download the utility from another computer and burn it to disk but it would not be bootable would it? Don't understand how to chck hard drive. Please advise.

Thank you for your help

Thanks for the response. Here is what I have done since:

Bought and installed a new hard drive same make as the one that came with the netbook. Tried to load a different os on the new drive because the netbook did not come with a cd to reinstall. Tried to load win 2000 onto the new drive. Error message was that the master boot missing. This was on the new hd that had never had anything on it and a win 2000 os disk that I know is good. Beats me.

Did you actually test the hard-drive? The netbook most likely had a recovery partition to reload the Vista basic operating system....which may/may not activate with the changing of the hard drive (a pet peeve irking many folks). I certainly would not be installing windows 2000. Many of the net books are designed to run specifically with with the factory installed operating system and even if 2000 did install, I doubt you would find any driver support, plus you need a valid license key. If the hard drive was defective, replacing it should solve the problem. Assuming and that is an "if" here, it was the hard disk keeping it from loading and replacing it would make it work....I would take the old hard drive (cause it has the recovery partition) and make an image of it, then put the image on the new drive....reboot and use the recovery options to reinstall vista basic.....this would avoid many issues, but is not for a novice. I don't how much a net book cost where you live, but one of the drawbacks is whether it's worth the expense to repair? If you did not test the hard drive before buying a new one....I'm not sure we have the right solution yet.

Thank you HopperRox for your response.

"The netbook most likely had a recovery partition to reload the Vista basic operating system...." IT Does! As I said in my original post, I can get to the repair manager and it acts like it is repairing ... then the repair console that has the choices is all greyed out. You cannot make a choice. I bought an external cd drive for the netbook and have tried most everything. It's been a while and I have a life, so I stored it in the closet for another time and bought another one. However, I will go back to it one day just to find out what the heck it is. For now, I have put it to rest.

Thank you again for your suggestions.
