Ear plugs & external speakers quit working

Specs: Windows Vista, 2 GHz / 3965 MB
Now nothing is muted. Have tried updating drivers, it says I have the best one already. My external quick working. Plug them in my laptop and nothing. The speakers in laptop work fine.None ear plug the same problem. I have noticed in device manger it has high defintion audio device listed twice. Thank you one and all.

Have you tried testing your earphones and speakers with any other device like an iPod to make sure they are in good working condition ?

yes and they work fine. have also tried using different working speakers and headset with the same problem. thank you

Try to update your Graphics drivers. The HDMI on your laptop has it's own audio so there maybe a problem with the ATI drivers and the Realtek ones that you have. But it should be listed as AMD High Definition Audio Device in your device manager, not just High Definition Audio Device.

Or you broke your headphone jack, very easy to do, very common. Do your speakers turn off when you plug in the headphones?
