So I have a dell studio which uses windows vista and I noticed issues w/ my cd drive about a month ago. I always burn cds using black CD-R discs and have never had any issues untill now; I usually use windows media or Itunes.About a month ago I inserted a burned CD my friend gave me w/ music on it bcuz i wantd to upload the songs onto my computer. That is when I began noticing it was not reading CDs. So, now when I go to burn a Cd and it tells me to put in a blank cd it doesnt register and nothing happens. Usually a pop up screen asking me what I woudl like to do would appear. This doesn't happen at all. I even tried inserting just a normal audio CD that I bought at target w/ music on it already, it didn't read that either. Then I tried inserting a DVD; it made a lot of sounds like it was trying to read it, but still nothing. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

It sounds like the drive laser needs to be cleaned. You can get disk drive cleaners at places like Walmart. If they don't work, you'll likely need to replace the drive. Don't panic because DVD-RW drives are pretty cheap these days and also easy to install.
