how can i repair or reverse registry failure if i cannot get pass that screen

You can use any Vista installation disk, or you can use the Vista Recovery Disk, available for download from a couple of sites (do a Google search for it) to do a Vista startup repair, as well as System Restore etc. You may also find that you have a built-in repair option - tap F8 a few times at boot to get to the safe mode menu, & if the option above these is 'repair my computer' try that.

Might try restore point too.

Find out how your computer expects you to recover it. See owners manual It may be that you have to make disks, buy disks or use a F key at boot.

But johnr says you can can borrow a Vista dvd to do some repairs as long as you don't just install with it. A windows 7 even works for some repairs.
