Deskjet 895cxi and Vista

Specs: Windows Vista
Hello. I recently purchased a new computer that runs Vista Home Premium. I had to buy a USB cable for my printer (HP Deskjet 895cxi), but when I plug it in, I get the following error message after it fails to install: "Windows cannot find driver software." I contacted HP for support, but after over an hour they could find no solution. I tried to manually add the printer, but it said "No printers were found." The printer worked fine on my last computer which ran Windows XP. Any suggestions on how to solve this problem and get my printer working with Vista?

Thanks.

Drivers for Deskjet 895cxi are built in to Vista. Read the last entry on the following URL and see if you can get the proper driver installed.

Thanks for responding. I checked that last post and he instructs me to search his response in the Scanning/Copying thread which I also did, but he didn't really offer a solution there.

I have also used the 'Add Printer' function. It will add the computer, but it will still not print because it's not installed properly.

When I am at hp.com and I put in my printer and select Vista I'm told that all I need to do is plug it in and it will work. But, it doesn't work. It doesn't even recognize that the hardware is a printer. Instead, it refers to it as an unknow device.

I'm really at a loss. I've contacted hp support for both the printer and the desktop and they were unable to solve the problem.

One suggestion on the HP website is to go through the 'add printer' method & to try using the driver for the deskjet 500c - this should give some functionality & let you at least check the printer. After that I'd suspect the cable or, if it's never been used, the USB port on the printer.

Thanks. I did as you suggested, but I still couldn't get the printer to work. You mentioned the cable--The cable I bought was a USB IEEE 1284 Printer Cable. It says on the package that it is a USB 1.1. The ports on my computer are for USB 2.0. Could this be the problem? I've tried searching on line for a cable that had USB 2.0, but couldn't locate one.

Thanks for replying.

Your printer should have a USB port as well as a parallel (IEEE 1284) connector - you'd be far better using USB throughout & I think that's where your problem lies.

Thanks, johnr. Unfortunately, my printer only has a parallel port. I guess it's about five years old. I appreciate the reply.

johnr, I checked again and I was wrong. It looks like my printer does have a USB port, but it is square rather than a rectangle. Are cables still available for these kind of ports?

hi all (& credit to Johnr )

just for info has your parallel to usb connector got 25 pins or 36

i suspect it has only 25 pin , which if right isnt compatible with vista for some reason , i only know because had the same issue few weeks ago

should look like this

http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-36-pin-to-P...

and to add

is this the alternative usb cable

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sumnique-Pr...

a usb printer cable

1stepbeyond,

Yes, I have a 36 pin connector. It looks the same as the one in the link you provided.

Thanks for the link for the other cable. I'll look for one of those.

Thanks for the response.

The USB connector on the printer is correct - it's the standard for any printer - just get a standard 'A' to 'B' USB lead & you're sorted - lot easier than messing around with a convertor.

I finally bought the USB 2.0 device cable and everything works now. Thanks to everybody who shared their knowledge with me. I appreciate it.
