Dell Inspiron 518 Factory Restore

March 25, 2013 at 10:31:56
Specs: Windows Vista
I'm trying to restore using the recovery partition. I hit F8 at startup to get to the advanced boot menu and select the repair option. From there it wants a username and password. I've tried the admin user account that I created and the built in "Administrator" account and neither work. The is a home pc, not on a domain but I get the following error: "The specified domain either does not exist or cannot be contacted".

Does holding control+F11 give you a recovery menu?

No. Ctrl+F11 doesn't do anything.

have you tried just hitting enter at the username/password part, leaving them blank and hitting enter? or Administrator with a blank password.

"I hit F8 at startup to get to the advanced boot menu and select the repair option"

That's not the factory recovery method, that's the Windows repair method. Ctrl+F11 are the proper keys for the factory recovery but you MUST press them at the correct time.
