Are you saying that your laptop has no button centre top on the touchpad?

There will (or ought to) be an indicator light (like a small led top centre of the touchpad; and immediately below is the on/off (enable/disable) switch for the touchpad.

Refer to page 2-5 in the manual to which I linked you in my earlier post. It shows the exact location of the indicator and the touchpad on/off switch/button.

Also check the touchpad settings/preferences as outlined in the text area below the image of the touchpad area - as shown on page 2-5

Make sure you haven't turned the touchpad off (there is a key combo which turns it off in case you want to use an external mouse instead).

If it isn't turned off, try reinstalling the touchpad driver for your laptop model from the HP website. The drivers page for your model is here:

http://support.hp.com/us-en/product...

If that doesn't fix the problem, contact HP if it's still under warranty.

This is where to get the actual service manual (how to take it apart...) for your compaq; different to the user manual (the one that tells you how to use it a few othert things as well):

http://www.lpmanual.com/manuals/com...

Nonetheless - sections/pages 2.4 - 2.5 show the layout of the keyboard and then area around the touchpad...

Button #4 on page 2.5 is the touchpad on/off... See if that works? When touch pad is enabled there is a white led; when it's disabled the led is amber.

Look on the touchpad, is there a little orange light on it in the upper left hand corner? If so, double tap the orange light. When it goes off, your touchpad will be active again.

No, there is no light. Only the one next to the on/off in the top middle.

I was not saying there is no light at the top of the touch pad. Someone had suggested one at top left. That I did not have. However since your latest posting I have, indeed, found a little orange light and a small button just above the touch pad in the canter. Problem solved. Changed light to white and all is restored. Thank you so much for your help.
