Computer suddenly freezes up

Specs: Windows Vista Home Premium SP2, Intel Pentium Dual-core T4200 @2.00 GHz 2.00 GHz/3 GB
This laptop computer will load without any problems, sometimes lasting for hours. Then all of a sudden and without warning, the mouse will not work (neither the built in pad nor the USB external). I cannot get the Task Manager or anything else to work, so my only alternative is to force the computer to turn off. Whether I reboot it immediately, wait a minute or an hour, upon restarting the computer, the Startup Options page loads and wants to know how I want to start up the computer. I choose Normally and it starts up. Within minutes, it freezes again. Even if I choose Safe Mode, it freezes up.

I have removed the RAM and the HDD and dusted out the computer, but it was not dirty and this has had no effect.

Any suggestions?

Thank you for your response. I had restored the computer to the original settings, only to find out that the computer was still rebooting itself. Just today, I found that the computer was still under warranty and would cost me nothing to repair. So I have set it up to do so.

Thanks again for your time and advice.
