Computer freezes completely and won't recover.

June 12, 2013 at 03:27:40
Specs: Windows Vista, Amd phenom 9550 / 8 gt
My parents Acer aspire PC randomly freezes when surfing on the Internet.
When the computer freezes nothing happens(ctrl+alt+Del or Num Lock wont work)
only way proceed is to shut down the computer completely.
It also sometimes freezes "slightly" when you can move mouse and use keyboard and freezing stops after a while.
No error message is shown(auto restart is disabled) or error report is created.
It would seem that it happens more often when using Firefox than chrome, but might just be coincidence. Also it happens more often when playing games, but it can happen also in light use.

I think that it's hardware/OS problem, but i'm not sure.
My father told me that the computer keeps quieter noise after it game back from computer repair(I didn't notice a difference). So I suspected that one of the fans could be broken and thus causing overheating.
I used graphics test with Speedfan to test PC:s temperature, but it didn't raise over 50 Celsius.
So do you know what the problem might be or some tool what i could use to identify the problem as my parents are thinking about buying new PC which I think is stupid.

Ps. I don't know specs of the computer as it isn't mine, but I can find them out if it is necessary.

Start, run, msconfig, go to startup tab. See if there is anything that doesn't belong & disable whatever doesn't need to load at boot time. Click ok & reboot & click ok again.

Also, download, update & run anti malware from malwarebytes.org

Run this program to ensure there are no addon toolbars installed:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...

Use the Scan to see if it finds anything under the various headings. If so just use the Delete to remove all addon toolbars it finds.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

msconfic or malvarebytes didn.t work and that PC uses both firefox and chrome, but not IE so dereks post didn't really make sense. And I also used that addon toolbar check, but it didn't find anything.
So the problem isn't resolved.!

"PC uses both firefox and chrome"
Sorry, I missed that bit, have amended #2.

You said "malwarebytes didn't work".
Do you mean the program didn't install or run?
Or do you mean it didn't fix your problem?

Look in "Control Panel > Programs and Features" to see if there are any dubious or unwanted programs.

Confirm that there is only one antivirus program running permanently in the background.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I don't think that the OP understands malwarebytes nor msconfig. That's why I suggested Hijack This.

If you haven't already run MalwareBytes freebie as well (which is a good idea),
you can get it here:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_m...

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

When I said that msconfic or malvarebytes didn.t work, I meant that they did not solve the problem, but I can try them again today to be sure.
edit: when checking msconfic in start up tab there was only windows vista as before. The malvarebytes is now doing complete search as I did quick search before

And I will also use Hijack This and post the log here later this day.
edit: Log posted

There is only one anti-virus program running (mcafee)

Control Panel > Programs and Features had no dubious or unwanted programs.

On the hardware side. You begin typing in windows search box "memory diagnostic.....it brings up Windows memory diagnostic in the list, click on it and schedule a memory scan, reboot, let windows test the memory. Bad memory ram or poorly seated ram module causes lots of issues. Alternatively you can download the ISO of memtest86+ and make a bootable cd from the "precompiled ISO". You boot to the cd on start up which may require you to change the boot order in the bios if you cannot change startup device by hitting a key on startup. Boot to cd and let the diagnostic run several passes. If it passes, then I would test the hard drive, you can download the specific one from the hard drive manufacturer or you can download Seatool from seagate it will work for most all hard drives. There are 2 versions one for DOS (if windows does not load, you burn a bootable cd from ISO and boot to your cd and run the seatool utility. If windows does boot you can download Seatool for Windows version. Install it and run it. You do a basic generic test and if it passes that you do a long generic test. If that passes then at this point it likely not a ram or hard drive problem, which will help work through if this a virus or hardware. Faulty ram can give faulty hard drive result so make sure a ram test is done first.

I have already checked ram and it didn't have any problems.
I can also do that hard drive test

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I can tell my parents to use it offline for a while sometimes, so we could see if it happens offline

Thanks for screenshot. Unfortunately there are many possibilities for this one, RAM being one of them. I think the first thing to do is scan the system files, see here:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/6...
This will replace any files that are corrupt or the wrong versions.

I see you have already done a RAM test, although it could be an intermittent fault.
There are other ways of exploring possible RAM issues if you are comfortable inside the box.

If you get a freeze without being on the internet please let us know.

Keep an eye open on here for other possibilities.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

That crash happened only once and after i'v deleted those entries there haven't been any freezing, but there have been times that freezing doesn't happen also before, so i'm not sure is this problem solved

I will use that SFC Command and report if it freezes offline.

There was definitely malware in the machine. I didn't explain why I suggested each entry but the entry that stood out the most was

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=userinit.exe,

That does not belong in system.ini Malware writers take legit file names & use them. That way it looks like it's supposed to be there. Location is very important.

There still maybe malware there. Run Hijack This again & post the new log.

What I see is a long list of .dll files attached to svchost. The .dll files have legit names & svchost..exe is a legit name but after searching Google I found some information about how McAfee screwed up svchost with an update. I noticed that your machine is running McAfee.

That's one more reason to add to my list as to why I don't use AV programs.

I tried to fix that svchost problem, but it didn't work out very well as i don't even have that file that is ordered to delete in 3rd step and other commands didn't do anything noticeable.

Would it help if I would do some kind of "factory reset" by destroying all files and maybe reinstalling windows?? As the computer doesn't contain anything important I could do that if that would help.

You can try that. However, I would like to know if deleting all the entries in O23 would work. Of course, you don't have to take that route just to satisfy my curiosity.

Otherwise boot the machine & hit F11 to access the recovery partition. Do you have the recovery CD, just in case something goes wrong?

I will destroy all O23 entries and tell if that work, if it didn't I just use system recovery.

Okay the computer didn't crash for couple days, after i had deleted those entries, but when I tried to play css that I had installed to that computer few years back it started crashing constatly when opening steam.
So could steam have some kind of malvare in side it causing crashing or was the "crash free" time just a coindience?

I know nothing about games except that they use a lot of memory which can cause a crash. To me, CSS is cross site scripting which is a browser vulnerability. I imagine that a game can be corrupt like anything else.

Is it still not crashing generally?

I'm no gamer either. Steam appears to be controversial - often reported by AV's but sometimes seen as a false positive. I have seen more than one report which indicated that there is a virus which gives itself the name steam.exe but viruses often try to ride on the back of accepted software. So, I really can't comment or help on this. The following link is typical of what I've seen:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/6158...
If it really IS installing malware then it is best avoided.

I think that the steam isn't the problem and it just was coincidence because I haven't even used it for couple years now, but it was just weird as the pc crashed exactly when i launched steam.
I noticed that the computer is now starting to crash more often than freeze, but before it didn't crash ever. Does that have a some kind of meaning?
I will do windows recovery tomorrow so I will see does that solve the problem.

Look at the performance monitor in the task manager. How much memory is in the PC?

The memory usage is 2gb/8gb which is normal.

#32 it is if it hasn't changed by itself.
#33 I didn't see anything unusual when I checked it last time

Anyway I haven't got time to do the recovery, but I say to my parents today that save all important things as I will do it tomorrow.
Also does reinstalling windows require serial key/code etc., because I don't have those, but I would like to it if recovery won't work.

Yes you will require a key for a full install but fortunately this free program will find it for you if you run it before you start:
http://www.magicaljellybean.com/key...
Always worth knowing anyway.

Nothing beats a full re-install but Repair Install is another option:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/8...
This requires a Vista Windows disk but there are other options without one.

I used recovery disks, but the problem still exists!!!!
Is it even possible virus to survive recovery??
There is one thing that maybe could have caused this: I copied firefox profile to memory card and then I replaced new profile with the old one. So could the virus have been in that Firefox profile file, even though I used virus scan to make sure that that wouldn't have
happened??

Anything is possible but mostly a virus will not come back if you do a full factory restore but if it is only a recovery (fix) then it is more likely. You could run the MalwareBytes Quick scan in Safe Mode as it is then more effective.

Unfortunately this is a "could be anything" symptom (hardware or software).
About all I can suggest is these - probably in the order given:

Clean the edge connectors of the RAM with a pencil eraser then pop the sticks in and out a few times to clear any oxide off the sockets themselves. I realise that you have already done a RAM check but sometimes oxide can cause intermittent issues. No harm applying the same to any card with edge connectors including both power and signal connectors if it is using SATA hard disks. Make sure all connectors are pressed firmly home.

Get the latest Windows updates, particularly Vista SP1 followed by SP2.

Ensure all your drivers are up to date but only get them from either the computer or motherboard manufacturers.

Sorry this is all very general but we still don't have any clear pointers to help us be more specific.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I did the full factory reset again and the pc still keeps crashing/freezing. I think that there
aren't virus, and all this have been caused by faulty hardware, so I am about to say to my parents that they can buy new pc, because the current is already pretty old.
I still try to fix the old one, so I could sell it and give the money to my parents.

I will do those steps that derek suggested, maybe I'll find what's causing this.
and guapo do you still think that there could be a virus?
