Checking file system

Microsoft Windows xp home edition with s...

Specs: Windows Vista
When I open my computer I get a message that says Checking file system on C: NTFS
then is says file record segment 47156 is unreadable
then file record segment 47157 is unreadable and so on
Then it does some checking and proceeds to open my computer as normal
whats going on ?

It appears that the hard drive is failing. It is important to backup any important files as they may soon become unavailable. The drive will likely have to be replaced.

backup then run chkdsk /f to correct/mark as unusable the clusters that are not readable. Do plan on replacing the drive.
