my hp pavilion 6200 was upgraded to vista before i got it, along with some kind of nasty virus which has now destroyed the os. I would like to wipe the hard drive and reinstall xp
You would need some media. It may be that you have to make disks or buy them or there is a restore partition. Playing to the angels

... if it exists:
[press]the power button to start the HP [press] and hold the <F11> key to launch the HP Recovery Manager from the recovery partition

I want to thank everyone for all the ideas some of which i fave already tried ie. boot into recovery part. Im down loading the free registry scan and an vista recovery disk to see if that will work. I will post my findings soon!!!!!
... as you mentioned "...some kind of nasty virus which has now destroyed the os..." ... perhaps if you virus scanned the pc and removed the infection
and if you have the folder "Windows.OLD" as you "upgraded to vista"
(if XP was already installed and you upgraded).... There is a method to "uninstall" Vista!
.... click here plus there are some screenshots to maximize for easy follow how-to's.
