jeff824, Go to the link below and download the exe file association fix. Usage Instructions are on the page.

http://www.winhelponline.com/articl...

Note: If you can't access the Internet with the problem computer use another computer to download the reg file fix onto a CD, thumb drive, or floppy and transfer the file to the problem computer.

After that .reg file is merged into the registry successfully restart your computer.

jeff824, Have you tried a file search for regedit.exe ? It should be in your C:\Windows folder.

jeff824,
Look in your C:\Windows folder and see if regedit.exe is actually there. Here's a way to access regedit when all else fails.

Open Task Manager. Once there, click File (on top menu), then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run). This will open a Command Prompt window. Enter REGEDIT.exe and press Enter. Once regedit is open click File>Import and locate that reg file fix, hilite it and click Open.

Jeff824, this is sheila18, I had the same problem with the "open with" box displaying every time I wanted to see a program installed or previously installed on my computer. You can right click the icon or program and click start, maybe that will help until the problem is fixed. But, I FIXED MY PROBLEM, by installing Spybot S&D, (make sure it is the fret one, version 162) when installing spybot, disable the option for TeaTimer which is enabled by default, so it doesn't affect your cleaning efforts. You can enable TeaTimer after finish cleaning the system. I hope this will help. I posted today 3/3/2010 on this site, if you want to see some of the advise I received from others. But, Spybot helped me. Please let me know if it helps you. Spybot was recommended to me years ago. Wished I had installed it sooner to prevent spyware, malware, trojan horses, etc. I also installed AVG Internet Security yesterday and it found the trojan horse SHeur3 Bey; I believe that was the problem with not opening my exe files and damaging of infecting my registry files.
