No, it says to do an upgrade install. This means that you'll still have all of your programs and settings.

When I got to upgrade or install page, upgrade was grayed out. Says to upgrade, cancel installation and choose to upgrade a version of Windows that is more recent than the version that you are currently running.

Then what you need to do is download and install a program called VLite. This will let you create a custom Windows Vista DVD ISO Image. What you need to do is slipstream SP2 into the DVD, an option should be presented to slipstream a service pack (you'll need to download the SP2 .EXE file from Microsoft). Then burn the ISO to a DVD, and try using it.

Have you tried the "fix it tool", I fixed a computer that would not update using it this morning.

hopper, When I try to install fix it, it says I need to install netfx first. When I try to install netfx, it says this product not supported on Vista operating system.

You need to install .net 2.0 or higher and must have service pack 3 installed for "fix it" tool to run, I had to install those, but then the tool did run and fix the problem.

When I went to your first link and tried to download dotnexfx3.5setup.exe, I received the following error [11/03/12,14:37:22] Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 'package': [2] Error: Installation failed for component Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 'package'. MSI returned error code 1603

When I went to the 2nd link there are 3 choices: all say Winxp Sp3 - one says docs - next is pdf - and 3rd is xps Which on should I choose?

@HopperRox: The OP's operating system is Vista, not XP, Service Pack 2 is the latest for Vista.

......ya ya ok, well for any kids trying this at home with xp...you need sp3.

Here is the full download for .net, this should install unless you have other errors in system files. so hopefully then you just need a working .net.

Other reason windows update fails that we sometimes overlook. Having an incorrect date or year. I have seen off an install where the data and time were not set correctly during O/S install and Windows will not update until that is corrected. Easy one to check.
