Specs: Vista 32bit
last night 2/28/10 I went to a site that suddenly closed and then Vista Internet Security 2010 came up. I think I was able to get rid of the malware (as it no longer has the popup) however, I can not open or run any .exe files. It states that "Windows cannot open this file" and would like to use the web or a program to open it. I cannot do a system restore or run .exe files in safe mode. I am able to run Spyware Doctor, but not Trend Micro Internet Security, CounterSpy, or Malware Bytes. Please help. I'd hate to have to do a clean install!!!

Go to the link and download the exe file association fix and follow the Usage Instructions.

File association fixes for Windows Vista

Note: If you can't access the Internet with the problem computer use another computer to download the reg file fix onto a CD, thumb drive, or floppy and transfer the file to the problem computer.

After that .reg file is merged into the registry successfully restart your computer

Edited to add: As far as running malware bytes go into your C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder and rename mbam.exe file to something else like eradicate.exe then try to run the malwarebytes program.
