my friend wants to borrow my windows vista disk, is the disk protected or not?

No there's no protection so it can be used to repair an existing installation. It cannot be used to do a complete install unless there's a valid activation key, either on a sticker on the case/base or if it's an oem system then it works with the hardware to activate.

Note that there are a couple of different Vista disks so you need to make sure you have the correct one.

A small addition to #1. For an install that key must not be active on another computer. If the key is an OEM one it must never have been used elsewhere.

I have to assume you friend wants to borrow your disk to install a copy of Vista and not use it to attempt a repair of his existing Vista install.

If so, you made a wise decision. Let him get a copy elsewhere or, better yet, advise him to buy a copy of Windows 7.

If he does in fact, just need to repair an existing install, I'd see no problem burning him a copy and let him attempt the repair.

That won't happen....it will ALWAYS work on your PC no matter what activation keys they try...no worries

Just don't 'lend' the person the activation key from your machine or from the box label - that's the only bit that could cause you issues.
